During Premier Hu’s visit in the United States of America, China Huaneng Group, ranking the first among Chinese top 5 power plants, has signed an agreement with American Electric Power Corporation. The agreement is about saving energy and reducing consumption in coal fired power plants and the technical cooperation for reducing discharge of the carbon dioxide. “This agreement has further promoted the technical cooperation in clean energy field, and China begins to export its technology to the United States of America.” said Xu Shiseng, Director of Huaneng Clean Energy Institute of Technology.

According to the agreement, both parties agree to adopt Huaneng Group’s self-developed carbon capture technology, conduct feasibility study in the 1.5 million ton carbon dioxide capture project of an American coal fired power plant which has a 600 MW installed capacity, and promote the construction of a demo project which could capture 1.5 million ton carbon dioxide annually.

“Using Chinese own technology to reduce discharge of the carbon dioxide in American power plants displays the fact that Chinese technology of carbon capture is at the leading position in the world.” Xu Shisen said. Huaneng Group’s carbon capture system has operated steadily for more than one year in Beijing Power Plant and Shanghai Shidongkou Second power plant, and the crucial technology upgrade experiment and test have obtained state verification.
